As we step into 2025, it’s hard not to feel a sense of excitement and possibility. One of the most incredible things about us as humans is our ability to keep going with the belief that things can and will get better. For many small businesses, January isn’t just a new month – it a chance for small business owners to reset and an opportunity to dream.
Last year, I watched so many handmade clothing businesses shut up shop. It’s a stark reminder of how challenging this journey can be. Sometimes, just getting to the end of the year feels like a win. For me, 2024 was a year of change, discovery and growth and it highlighted the immense potential of Alternativ Bones for 2025. This year, I’m determined to focus on more than just survival.
Reflecting on 2024
March 2025 marks four years of Alternativ Bones, a milestone I never imagined when I started. Looking back on 2024, I’ve made some interesting discoveries:
- I’ve processed over 700 orders.
- I’ve had consistent sales both online and in real life.
- I’ve completed more markets than I can count on one hand and gained followers across all platforms.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, and honesty matters.
- I lost £400 by trading at Redbrick Market – an expensive lesson about finding the right audience for my brand
- My turnaround times slipped on a few occasions, something I’ve committed to improving.
- And yes, I still don’t pay myself a wage.
Running a small business is a rollercoaster of wins and lessons. It’s easy to focus on the struggles, but I don’t want to stop. I feel like there is so much more to do in 2025.
Meet the Boss
This year changes are afoot – not just in my plans but in my mindset. For the past 4 years, I have been an incredible worker, pouring my energy into marketing, selling and making every single item by hand, That’s not going to change – every piece will still be made by me. But now, I’m embracing the role of the boss, someone who looks at the
bigger picture. It’s about stepping back to plan ahead, ensuring the business runs smoothly, and delivering the quality and exclusivity you expect.
The boss in me has already planned for the first 6 months of this year and I have got some cracking collections coming your way. Here’s what you can expect:
· Simplified Collections to ensure smooth ordering and quicker delivery whilst still maintaining the high quality items and exclusive prints you love,
· Extended Availability on prints, giving you more time to and curate your Alternativ Bones wardrobe.
· Regular Email Updates, so you never miss out on the latest collections or news.
Markets and More for 2025
Markets remain a growing part of my business and I’m already lining up where you’ll find me this year. · I plan to return to the artisan markets in South Birmingham where I’ve seen a huge demand for larger sizes – so expect more of those.
· In July, Ill be at the Alternative Market in Coventry. With “alternativ” in my name, you know how much I love this side of my business and I’m excited to showcase it further.
Additionally, I’m working to make sure that there’s a steady stream of ready-made items for anyone that may stumble upon my business. While patience is a virtue, I know that some of you want handmade clothing this week, not next month!
Looking ahead
2025 is all about balance – between creativity and structure, between ready-made and made-to-order and between growing my audience and staying true to my roots. This year isn’t about survival anymore, its about enjoying my business and bringing you awesome collections, better market experiences, and an even stronger connection to what makes Alternativ Bones special.
